Vintage Scottish silver mounted Sgian Dubh, Edinburgh, circa 1910-50.
A sgian dubh displaying a carved wooden Celtic interlaced knotwork handle with an engraved zig-zag silver mount to the base. The pommel is set with open claw mount enclosing a faceted smoky quartz. The steel blade has a scalloped back edge and single fuller.
The leather covered wooden scabbard is decorated with silver mounts, the bottom displaying finely engraved Celtic knotwork, the top with scrolling foliage and an oval-shaped cartouche (could be engraved).
Note: although unmarked this sgian dubh bears close comparisons to Edinburgh made examples post 1900. The finely engraved mounts are similar to examples by Young & Tatton, T. K. Ebbutt and R. & H.B. Kirkwood. As the mounts likely fall below the legal weight to necessitate hallmarking, it is not surprising to see this piece unmarked.
Blade length 8.7cm
Overall length 20cm
Width (max) 3cm
